Retro-inspired indie games are all too common, but this one looks particularly delightful. German indie developer Bonus Level Entertainment and publisher EuroVideo are bringing the Kickstarter-funded 16-bit platformer Fox n Forests to PC and consoles this spring. It will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Mac, and Linux.

Fox n Forests stars an anthropomorphic fox named Rick. Rick has a magical crossbow. In addition to using it for ranged and melee combat, it has the ability to switch between two seasons within each level. Switching seasons changes the level’s layout, changing enemies, opening up secrets, and creating new platforms.

The developers cite 16-bit classics like Wonder Boy, Castlevania, and Zelda as gameplay inspirations.

“Fox n Forests will surely speak to a wide audience,” says Marc Wardenga, Head of Games at EuroVideo. “References to the golden age of classic 16-Bit games, mixed with a unique soundtrack and contemporary, precise, and accessible gameplay, will bring back fond memories of retro games.”

Fox n Forests was successfully funded via Kickstarter in 2016. It’s the first title being published under EuroVideo’s new games label, Wild River. The game will first be playable on the show floor at PAX East, which takes place in Boston, MA on April 5-8.

Fox n Forests is scheduled to release later this spring on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Mac, and Linux.
