The tagline “Does the suit make the man?” refers to an important plot point shown in the trailer. Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) is given a fancy new high-tech spidey suit from Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), but appears to lose his trust and the suit. Spider-Man must find redemption, while also battling Vulture (Michael Keaton) and his villainous crew.
This trailer is very action-heavy and focuses on Tony Stark, who definitely has a bigger role than just a cameo. Stark’s character has been instrumental in creating and building the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe over the last decade.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is the result of lengthy deliberations between Marvel and Sony, whom they had previously sold the film rights to. Marvel had been gunning to get Spider-Man back to appear in their own Marvel Studio films for years. Spider-Man’s appearance in Captain America: Civil War was the first fruit of that labor. Spider-Man: Homecoming is the first full movie featuring Spider-Man within the MCU.
With five films and two reboots within the last 15 years, this version of Spider-Man will differentiate itself by portraying a younger hero, and not retelling his origin story yet again. Peter Parker is already Spider-Man (as shown in Captain America: Civil War) but he’s depicted as a 16-year old still firmly in high school and learning about being a hero. Actor Tom Holland is by far the youngest to portray the superhero at age 21.
Spider-Man: Homecoming releases on July 7.
