Bethesda may have excited – and immediately disappointed a large number of their fans when they announced new content sporting the name Morrowind. Morrowind was the name and location of The Elder Scrolls III, and still considered by many to be the best Elder Scrolls game. In this case, Morrowind is being added as a expansion  to The Elder Scrolls Online.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind adds Vvardenfell – the name of the giant island in Morrowind. It’s the largest zone added to the game since launch. Bethesda are counting on nostalgic gamers to jump in, as the map will include all the familiar locations from the seminal 2002 RPG.

The Elder Scrolls Online takes place hundreds of years before The Elder Scrolls series. That’s a good thing, because Vvardenfell was destroyed in a volcano blast following the events of The Elder Scrolls III.

The expansion also adds a new character class, The Warden. The Warden uses nature-based magic and a War Bear ally. New 4v4 PvP Battlegrounds will also be added.

This isn’t the first time Bethesda has revisited Morrowind. The final DLC for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Dragonborn, has you returning to the region via the nearby island of Solstheim (which was itself featured in the Morrowind expansion Bloodmoon).

The upcoming MMORPG expansion will serve as a stand-alone chapter that new players can jump right in and play. The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind does not require a monthly subscription. It will be sold as a one-time paid expansion.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind launches on June 6, 2017. Existing ESO players can upgrade to Morrowind through a special Upgrade Edition for $39.99. Newcomers can purchase the Standard Edition, which will also include The Elder Scrolls Online base game for $59.99. A Collector’s Edition is also available in digital and physical formats.
