Sci-fi fans rejoice: the Doctor is coming to LEGO Dimensions! Even better, original actors Peter Capaldi (the 12th Doctor), Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald), and Michelle Gomez (Missy) have all been confirmed as voice actors for the game.

The Doctor Who LEGO Dimensions video game is part of the LEGO company’s upcoming toys-to-life series of games. Toys-to-life games are games that can use physical toys as digital characters inside the game. The technology is already being used by Skylanders, Disney Infinity, and Nintendo.

The Doctor Who news was announced at San Diego Comic-Con. LEGO is in the wonderfully unique position of bringing together characters from across franchises in ways that are ordinarily impossible. For example, while we’d never see Batman making appearances in an episode of Doctor Who, it is entirely possible with LEGO. LEGO has the rights to characters from franchises across the nerd spectrum. Case in point, the newly released trailer features the Doctor, Batman, Gandalf, Doc Brown and the Delorean, Homer Simpson, Aperture Science, and Wyldstyle.

The 12th Doctor is featured most prominently in the new trailer. But LEGO has also announced that when you die as the 12th Doctor, you are brought back as the 1st Doctor, and then the 2nd, and so on. In other words, players will have the chance to play as all of the Doctor’s incarnations. Even cooler, the interior of the TARDIS will update to match whichever Doctor you’re using.

Buying Toys to Life games is always a little more complicated than buying regular, toy-free games. LEGO Dimensions will require a base. The base reads the NFC (near-field communication) chip in the bottom of the toy. In a press release, LEGO stated, “Fans who want more Doctor Who in LEGO Dimensions will be able to purchase the Doctor Who Level Pack which includes an additional mission-based Doctor Who level, along with a LEGO minifigure of the 12th Doctor and LEGO models of the TARDIS and K-9, all playable in the game.” Alternatively, players can purchase a Doctor Who Fun Pack. The Fun Pack will include a playable Cyberman figure and a playable Dalek figure.

Unlike Skylanders, amiibo, or Disney Infinity figures, the LEGO figures will be able to be pulled apart and put back together to create different effects in the game.

LEGO Dimensions comes out on September 27 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii U.
