Nintendo Switch Becomes Best Selling Nintendo Console in History

As we predicted in our Holiday Gift Guide, the Switch is the hottest gaming product this holiday season. Nintendo has officially confirmed that the Switch became the best selling console in Nintendo’s history over the five day Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales weekend (Nov. 22-26) in the U.S.

Thanks to online stat-tracker tool Adobe Analytics, Nintendo has announced that the Switch was the top-selling video game product, and one of the most purchased items online during the sale period, beating out even the Wii motion control craze from a decade ago.

In total sale-savvy shoppers spent over $250 million on Nintendo products, including consoles, games, and accessories.

This year’s sales for Nintendo were a huge increase compared to last year, to the tune of 115%. First party Nintendo games sold a million units, an increase of 78% over last year. The big new sellers included Super Mario Party, which surpassed one million units since its launch in October, becoming the fastest-selling Mario Party game and the fifth Switch game to reach the million-seller tier.

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! also sold very well, reaching over 1.5 million units sold combined. (read our review).

Nintendo’s mini classic consoles also sold well again this year. The Super NES Classic Edition reached 2.5 million units, with its older brother NES Classic Edition reaching 2 million units.

Nintendo helped lead the way on a record-setting Cyber Monday, which saw consumers spend $7.9 billion in online shopping, making it the single biggest shopping day in U.S. history.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime had previously told Yahoo Finance that the holiday sales season is critical, making up about 60% of the company’s yearly revenue.

Super Mario Party Bundle Includes Neon Joy-Con

Super Mario Party supports up to four player multiplayer, but the Switch only comes with a pair of Joy-Con for up to two. In response, Nintendo has announced a special Super Mario Party Bundle that includes another pair of neon Joy-Con controllers. The Super Mario Party Bundle is out Nov. 16 for $99.99.

A single half Joy-Con retails for around $50, while a pair of Joy-Con sells for an astonishingly $80, making this a very good deal if you have a big family (or friends) who plan on playing Super Mario Party ($60). At full price, the bundle will save you about $40.The included Joy-Con are given a distinctive color scheme at neon green and neon yellow.

Super Mario Party features 80 mini-games in its classic four-player multiplayer board game set up. The mini-games utilize the precise motion controls of the Joy-Con. Two Switch systems can be paired together for special series of games in Toad’s Rec Room that utilize both screens together. A new cooperative series of mini-games can be tackled in the River Survival mode.

Super Mario Party also takes the series online for the first time. Online Mariothon features a series of five rotating mini-games, with leaderboards, rankings, and rewards. A subscription to Nintendo Switch Online is required to access the online mode.

Super Mario Party is available now, and rated E for Everyone. The Joy-Con bundle is out Nov. 16.

Win a Nintendo Switch with Specially Marked Lunchables

For the upcoming launch of Super Mario Party, Nintendo has partnered with Oscar Mayer’s Lunchables brand food packs for a promotional sweepstakes. The grand prize is an entire Nintendo Switch console. The promotion kicks off October 5 and lasts through December.

“This partnership with Lunchables is another exciting way for us to expose even more people around the country to the world of Nintendo,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo Senior VP of Sales and Marketing. “This program is a perfect opportunity to kick off the celebration of Super Mario Party by combining the game’s love for unpredictable fun with Lunchables’ love of letting kids make their own fun with their favorite foods.”

Every box of specially marked Lunchables packs will include a unique code that can be entered online. Only 500 codes will result in a winning prize. Prizes range from an entire Switch system to extra Joy-Con controllers, a carrying case, My Nintendo Points, and a copy of Super Mario Party.

Super Mario Party is launching October 5 on Switch. It features dozens of minigames in the classic board game structure, as well as new cooperative modes.

For a series first, players can also play sets of minigames online. Toad’s Rec Room is a new feature that allows two owners of Super Mario Party and their own Swithc systems to pair them up, combining the two screens for some specific minigames. Super Mario Party is rated E for Everyone.
