Shredder's Revenge's art style and storytelling is inspired by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' original comic book and cartoon roots in the 1980s. Shredder and the Foot Clan are up to their old scheming tricks, trying to restore the android body of big villain Krang, and take over New York City. It feels like an extended episode of the original Saturday Morning Cartoon.
The Turtles, along with allies April O'Neal and Casey Jones, must journey through levels across the city and into Dimension X, battling ninjas, robots, and familiar mutant enemies.
Gameplay is heavily inspired by the original TMNT Beat 'Em Up games that were popular on Arcades and early 90s consoles. Players unleash attacks, throws, and special moves to defeat waves of enemies and take on challenging boss battles. The genre is well-suited to cooperative play, and the game scales accordingly with more players.
Three appropriately Turtles-esque difficulty settings are available: Chill, Okay, and Gnarly. Difficulty settings change the amount of player lives, and damage and speed of enemies. Additionally, players can choose to play the entire campaign in Arcade mode, with no save progress, or Story Mode, for save progress plus unlockable upgrades.
Violence Beat 'Em Ups are all about constant, up-close melee combat. But the ninja weapons, throws, and explosions are kept colorful and gore-free, as you'd expect in a Turtles game.
Shredder's Revenge can be played solo, or with up to six players in local and online co-op.
