Story & Themes
Rusty's Retirement is a unique idle farm sim designed to sit at the bottom (or side) of your PC monitor. The titular robot wants to expand their farm using automated robots to grow crops, and convert them to biofuel and spare parts, which are needed to expand the farm, build more robot drones, and lay down additional crop patches.
More advanced crops are unlocked by growing certain crops in certain quantities, which in turn bestow more biofuel. Robot helpers (non-drones) can also be brought to the farm by purchasing and placing their houses. Many add new gameplay elements, such as raising livestock for fertilizer, upgrading drones, and automatically seeding crops.
By fully expanding the farm in both directions, players can unlock additional farms with different challenges, such as deserts and rivers.
As an idle game, growing crops and making money takes significant time, and the player is encouraged to either leave it running, or work/play on other things on their PC.
Save Points
The game auto saves at regular intervals, and can be saved any time. Only one save slot per farm.
Difficulty
Rusty's Retirement's lack of tutorial and minimalist graphics could be a challenge for younger and newer players, though there is a Help section hidden in the settings. Gameplay is intuitive if you're used to the basic gameplay loop of farming games: plant seeds in crop patches, water them, wait, water again, wait, and harvest. Rusty and their drones take care of watering and harvesting. The player needs to build out the farm, and balance water and harvesting needs with monetary and spacial limitations.
