Story & Themes
Cobalt Core is a card game descended from roguelike deckbuilder Slay the Spire and roguelike spaceship game FTL. A group of young, anthropomorphic spaceship operators are stuck in a time-loop, and only by completing randomly generated runs can they remember their past and escape to the future.
Players advance through a run by adding and upgrading cards and defeating enemy spacecraft by playing cards. Player and enemy ships must line up their shots (and avoid being shot) by playing evasion cards, using shields, or disabling enemy cannons.
The story is told through humorous commentary from the crew and enemies, including comedic enemies like honorable rat-knights. Successfully completing a run rewards players with additional content, usually other crew members (with their own set of cards and upgrades) as well as special scenes that unlock more of the story.
Save Points
Cobalt Core autosaves after every encounter. Players can save and quit anytime.
Difficulty
Cobalt Core features four difficulty levels: Normal, Hard, Harder, and Hardest. If you're a veteran of the genre, Normal may feel a little easy, while newcomers will find it plenty challenging. Although the game is rated E for Everyone (6+), Cobalt Core is a strategic card game that's probably more suited for older kids.
