Tile-laying indie game Dorfromantik is one of our favorite games of the year, and it just got better. A big update has been added to the beta branch, unlocking the new Creative Mode, as well as adding multiple save game slots.

Creative mode is a new game mode with infinite tile stacks, and configurations you can tweak to adjust the kind of tiles you’ll see. Different biomes can be swapped off or on, and unwanted tiles can be skipped entirely. After finishing a normal game, you have the option of continuing the session in creative mode after scoring.

The other major addition is the save system. Previously you could only continue the last game you left, but now there is support for an unlimited number of save games in classic and creative mode, including autosaves for each mode. Each save game has a screenshot displayed on the menu to help remind what that game looked like.

Some bug fixes, load time improvements, and general optimizations have also been added.

To access the beta branch, you’ll need to do the following:

  1. Navigate to Dorfromantik in your Steam Library
  2. Right-click on Dorfromantik and select Properties
  3. A Property window should popup where you can select Betas
  4. Select public-beta as the beta you would like to opt into from the dropdown list
  5. Close the property window and “[public-beta]” should be added to the game name of Dorfromantik in the Steam Library list as confirmation

It does seem a bit weird that the update is delivered through the beta, even though Dorfromantik is already in Steam Early Access. Dorfromantik is available on Steam PC, and slated for a full release later this year.
