City builder Cities: Skylines has arrived on PlayStation 4. Ported to PS4 by Tantalus Media and published by Paradox Interactive, Cities: Skylines PlayStation 4 Edition includes the After Dark expansion. It’s available digitally and via retail for $39.99.
The PS4 version has been adapted from the 2015 PC version, originally developed by Colossal Order. An all-new interface and control scheme has been built to incorporate controllers.
Cities: Skylines is a city simulator that lets you build roads, zone districts, and provide services to your citizens. You can pass city-wide policies and ordinances as well as divide up your city into multiple districts.
Traffic features include buses, trains, and subways. The traffic systems are particularly advanced. They’re based on Colossal Order’s previous city game, Cities in Motion.
The After Dark expansion adds a day-night cycle and new night-focused activities and buildings, including a casino.
Two additional expansions were released on PC in 2016: Snowfall and Natural Disasters. The Mass Transit expansion released earlier this year. None of them appear to be coming to the console version. Player mods are also a major part of the PC version, but not available for console.
Since Cities: Skylines launched in 2015 it has become a critical and commercial success for Paradox, selling several million copies. After the launch fiasco and critical shellacking of EA’s SimCity (2013), Cities: Skylines filled the void for a dedicated, single player city building sim. It’s widely considered to have surpassed SimCity’s tarnished legacy and become the de facto gold standard for city sims.
Cities: Skylines was previously ported to Xbox One earlier this year. It’s been rated E for Everyone. Cities: Skylines PlayStation 4 Edition is available now.
