Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age is an official HD Remaster of the 2006 RPG. It launched this week for the PlayStation 4. The Zodiac Age includes HD graphics and soundtrack as well as a revamped battle system.
The divisive gambit combat system of Final Fantasy XII has been updated with the new Zodiac Job System. Now you can combine two jobs from 12 classic Final Fantasy options. Japan got an updated remake of Final Fantasy XII that included this overhaul a decade ago.
Other new features in The Zodiac Age include 7.1 surround sound, a survival-like trial mode, and modern additions like auto-saving and PS4 trophies. A new fast-forward option lets you speed up the action while traveling or fighting. You can also switch between the original soundtrack and the remastered version.
The original Final Fantasy XII was saddled with delays, and released during an awkward time at the very end of the PlayStation 2’s life cycle – the same year the PlayStation 3 released. The complex combat system, which involved assigning little programming-like sequences and choices for each party member, turned many people off.
A Collector’s Edition of Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age is available on the Square Enix store for $199.99. It includes a bunch of physical goodies, including a Steelbook case, Judge Magisters Mini Bust Set, and a set of six Art Cards. A less crazy-priced Limited Edition is also available (though true to its name, you can now only join a Waiting List). It includes the Limited Edition Steelbook game case and a digital code for the soundtrack.
Like most FF games, Final Fantasy XII has been rated T for Teen by the ESRB. It includes Mild Blood, Suggestive Themes, and Violence.
