After a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over half a million dollars and two years of development, Thimbleweed Park has been granted a final release date of March 30. The modern yet retro adventure title will launch for PC (Windows, Mac, Linux) and Xbox One. Pricing has yet to be announced.
Thimbleweed Park is the passion project developed by Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick. The old-school PC developers were behind classic LucasArts point and click adventure games such as Maniac Mansion and The Secret of Monkey Island.
Like Double Fine’s Broken Age, Thimbleweed Park was developed as a return to form for the traditional puzzle-filled adventure genre. The gameplay looks to recreate the SCUMM engine of those 80s/90s LucasArts adventures, including verb buttons to interact with objects and people. The art’s pixelated style also strongly evokes that era of gaming.
The story features a murder mystery set in the titular town of Thimbleweek Park. You play as five different characters, including a ghost and a clown. You’ll need to switch between them to explore the town and solve puzzles in what’s described as a “dark and humorous neo-noir mystery.”
If the prospect of a modern point and click adventure game makes you all warm and fuzzy, check out the indie titles by Wadjet Eye Games. The Blackwell series, Resonance, Primordia, Technobabylon and Shardlight are all worthy torch-bearers for the point and click adventure.
Thimbleweed Park launches March 30 for PC and Xbox One. It is also planned for a mobile release on iOS and Android later this year.
