During the recent PlayStation State of Play, Insomniac Games revealed the first full gameplay trailer for anticipated action game, Marvel’s Wolverine.
We also got a release date. Or at least, a release season. Marvel’s Wolverine will release next year, Fall 2026, on PlayStation 5.
Although this is the same studio that made the T-rated Spider-Man games, Marvel’s Wolverine is ratcheting up the violence factor. I guess it’s no surprise given a hero that can regenerate any wound, and has knife-hands.
Plus, Wolverine’s most recent cinematic outings, Logan and Deadpool & Wolverine, were both hugely successful R-rated films, with plenty of bloody violence.
The game will likely receive a Mature rating from the ESRB, which I believe is Insomanic’s first since the Resistance series on the PlayStation 3 over a decade ago.
As a parent who loves Marvel, and Marvel games, I’m conflicted.
I appreciate when Wolverine can lead into his dark side and actually use his claws.
On the other hand, Wolverine is also a part of the (far less murdery) X-Men, including the recent and wonderful X-Men ’97 animated series that I can watch with the family. I also loved playing Insomniac’s Spider-Man series with the kids watching.
It’s, uh, not looking like Marvel’s Wolverine will be a time for family gaming!
This version of Wolverine is set in the same universe as Insomaniac’s Spider-Man games, though whether we’ll see any crossover is yet to be discovered.
The story sets the hairy mutant on a journey for answers around the world, including his home country of Canada, the city of Tokyo, and the infamous criminal hotspot Madripoor. The trailer also showcases at least two other mutant adversaries, Mystique and Omega Red.
Marvel’s Wolverine will release next Fall on PlayStation 5.
