The Child Mind Institute have partnered with the California Department of Health Care Services to launch Mirror, a free mental health app designed for teenagers.
Mirror is a journaling app that supports text, voice, images, and video entries, providing daily mood tracking, guided prompts, and more.
It’s not therapy, but the app encourages self-reflection, emotional processing, and safe expression.
All user data is encrypted and not stored or monitored by anyone. Mirror also provides access to emergency contacts and helplines, and support notifications.
“The youth mental health crisis is ongoing, and there’s a clear need for accessible mental health support for teens,” said Harold S. Koplewicz, MD, president and medical director of the Child Mind Institute. “We understand that journaling can serve as a tool for self-expression, emotional regulation, and personal growth, especially when paired with mood tracking. With Mirror, teens have an accessible and private space to express themselves freely in writing, videos, or voice recordings to explore their emotions and develop self-awareness without fear of external judgment.”
The app was inspired and designed through close collaboration with teens from the Institute’s Youth Mental Health Academy.
Mirror Journaling + Insights is available on iOS and Android mobile devices. It’s currently only available in the US, but supports English and Spanish.
