Just over 6 months after Game Informer was shut down by parent company GameStop, the venerable gaming magazine is back! And not just in name-only; the entire team that was laid off at the time of shut down has returned, as GI enters a new era under ownership by Gunzilla Games.

Editor-in-Chief Mat Miller posted an official message on the newly returned Game Informer website. Here is an excerpt:

“Our outlet has always been about more than just the things we cover; it’s also about the people. Our teammates are stewards of a legacy going back more than 30 years, including dozens of prior writers, editors, designers, and other creative voices that shaped the way we approach talking about the gaming hobby. With the brand and team reunited, we can move forward with confidence that we’re maintaining that unbroken identity of who we are and what we represent.”

All Digital Archives have returned. The print magazine, one of the last of its kind, is also making a comeback, “bigger and better” than before, along with membership and subscription options. Interested folks can start by creating an account.

According to Gunzilla Games, Game Informer will remain “completely editorially independent.”

“We are proud to welcome the talented voices behind Game Informer in the Gunzilla Games family, and join their fight to preserve the heart of video game journalism in what has been a tumultuous time for the industry,” said Vlad Korolov, CEO & Co-founder, Gunzilla Games. “Its legacy spans over 33 years, the publication has had a dedicated readership since its inception and still holds a special place in the hearts of many players across multiple generations — including us.”

As the GI team missed covering about six months worth of games, they’ve been busy catching up on reviews, such as Astro Bot, Monster Hunter Wilds, Avowed, and Marvel Rivals.

In an August 2024 newsletter, I wrote a farewell to Game Informer, which ran for 33 years and published over 360 issues. Happy to see them return!
