Wild Blue, a new aerial combat game, was revealed during the Humble Games Showcase this week.

The developers of Chuhai Labs make it crystal clear that Wild Blue is love letter to Star Fox, from the Key Art, anthropomorphic animals, ship designs, and gameplay. Not to mention the barrel roll joke in the teaser.

Speaking of the teaser, it doesn’t show much gameplay, but does feature some gags and jokes from the developers, if that’s your thing. They seem fun.

The studio was founded by original Star Fox programmer Giles Goddard. That could make Wild Blue a pretty darn accurate spiritual successor.

The very 90s cartoon story stars Bowie Stray and the Blue Bombers as they fight back against an evil Baron. The gameplay promises classic on-rails shooting with modern controls and improvements. Plus, an anime-style universe, full campaign (with squad of allies), branching paths, scoring system, and a variety of locations and levels.

Hardcore Star Fox fans probably already know this, but Star Fox and the long-lost, previously unreleased Star Fox 2 are available on the Super NES Classic Edition.

This may be a tad blasphemous, but in 2017 I declared that the original Star Fox “just doesn’t hold up very well.” But maybe we’re due for a modern indie team to build something better, while still dripping with obvious nostalgia.

Wild Blue does yet have a release date, but look for an official gameplay trailer soon.
