Indie publisher Future Friends Games have released the Studio Ghibli-inspired adventure game Europa on Steam PC and Nintendo Switch ($14.99).
Europa is set on the moon of Jupiter, which, ah, looks a little different than I expected, with mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and creatures. May as well be a fantastical setting!
The story stars Zee, an android who looks like a young boy, as he explores the ruins. Zee isn’t built for fighting, and Europa is a peaceful game free of conflict. But he does have a jetpack, which can unlock upgrades to boost, glide, and soar through beautiful, colorful landscapes in search of answers to Europa’s downfall.
Beloved Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli has been the inspiration for many animators and games, from Ni No Kuni, to Hotel Galactic.
Europa is the passion project of Helder Pinto and Novadust Entertainment. Pinto’s previous credits include art director for Blizzard Entertainment on Overwatch and Diablo, before assembling a development team at Novadust Entertainment. Europa is their first release.
The art design looks gorgeous, with bright, vivid colors and animation. Don’t expect a big open world, however. Total length to complete the linear exploration game is only about five hours.
Europa is available now on Switch and Steam (Steam version is 10% off through Oct. 25). The nonviolent adventure is rated E for Everyone.
