Warner Bros. has released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Minecraft movie, which is simply called, A Minecraft Movie. A Minecraft Movie will release in theaters on April 4, 2025.

Here’s the official description:

Four misfits – Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) – find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: the bizarre, blocky wonderland that we know and mine extensively love.  To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like piglins and zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black).  Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

Hm. That blurb, and the trailer, give off major Jumanji-reboot vibes, where a group of people get sucked into a fantastical video game world. Lots of sight gags, lots of jokes.

The comment section on YouTube isn’t happy that the majesty of the biggest game in the world is reduced to a comedy with a bunch of outsiders getting dropped in.

And Minecraft Steve, played by Jack Black.

Jack Black was also in Jumanji. And the Super Mario Bros. Movie. And Borderlands.

Jack Black must have a thing for video game adaptations?

Warner Bros. Pictures has been in talks with Minecraft studio Mojang to adapt the game into a major motion picture since 2014.

A Minecraft Movie is directed by Jared Hess, of Napoleon Dynamite fame. It’s out in theaters on April 4, 2025.
