Revolution Software has revealed a release date for Broken Sword – Shadow of the Templars: Reforged. The Broken Sword remaster will arrive on PC, PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox on September 19.

If you only know adventure games from Sierra (King’s Quest) and LucasArts (Monkey Island), let me be the first to say that the Broken Sword series is among the best of the genre. It’s a modern-day adventure that’s one part Da Vinci Code and one part Indiana Jones.

The first game released in 1996, and stars American tourist George, and French investigative journalist Nico as they uncover a sinister historical conspiracy. The series spans five games, including an awkward (and thankfully brief) transition to 3D, and a crowd-funded fifth entry.

The Reforged remaster includes 4K resolution, repainted backgrounds, reanimated sprites, and enhanced audio. The remaster also adds a new story mode to “dynamically balance narrative and gameplay progression,” which includes hints to avoid frustration.

And my favorite component to modern remasters: players can swap between the original version and the remaster with the click of a button.

“Point and click offers a simple interface from which captivating, challenging gameplay emerges,” said Charles Cecil, founder and CEO, Revolution Software. “But the user experience has remained unchanged since the ‘90s when Broken Sword redefined the genre. Our research suggested that gamers now prefer a more contemporary experience. Broken Sword has a hugely passionate fan base, which runs over three generations. With these graphic and user experience enhancements,  we look forward to hearing from fans once the game crosses over, once again, to a fourth generation who love narrative-driven games.”

The Broken Sword series is rated T for Teen.
