Pixelated 2D platformer Kitsune Tails has released on Steam PC ($19.99), earning an impressive Overwhelmingly Positive rating from over 500 user ratings (currently 98%).

I’m a simple gamer. If I see a game that looks and plays like Super Mario Bros. 3, I like it.

And I’m not alone!

Kitsune Tails stars Yuzu, a young kitsune, a fox-girl from Japanese folklore, as well as her human love Akko, and fellow kitsune rival Kiri.

Yuzu explores a world inspired by Japanese mythology as she untangles a messy love triangle. Gameplay is directly inspired by classic 2D Mario games from the NES and SNES eras. Kitsune Tails also includes mini-games, lots of power-ups, and bonus kaizo levels (read: super challenging) after beating the story.

Fans are encouraged to make their own levels and minigames with Lua script and the Tiled map editor.

Kitsune Tails has been verified on the Steam Deck, and is also available on Itch.io. It’s also coming to PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox consoles, though a release date has not been announced.

Developer Kitsune Games was founded by queer game designer Eniko Maassen. Kitsune Tails is published by MidBoss, a publisher who champions diversity and inclusion, and created the Season of Pride gaming showcase.
