Anticipated RPG Avowed has been officially delayed from its 2024 release into next year. The new release date is February 18, 2025, clearing the way for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 to dominate the holiday season for Microsoft.

The Xbox X/Twitter account claims it’s “to give players’ backlogs some breathing room.” Fair enough!

Developed by Obsidian Entertainment (The Outer Worlds), Avowed is a Skyrim-like immersive RPG. Players will explore the developer’s original fantasy world of Eora, first introduced in the Pillars of Eternity tactical RPGs. The customizable protagonist can wield a combination of melee weapons, spells, and and gunpowder firearms, as well as unlock new skills and abilities.

Gameplay and world design is similar to The Outer Worlds (which is still getting its own sequel), with large zones to explore, multiple factions to work for, and companions to journey with.

As a beloved developer of RPGs, Avowed was one of the most anticipated games of the year, now delayed. But this holiday season is packed with big releases: Star Wars Outlaws (Aug. 30), The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (Sept. 26), Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred (Oct. 8), Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (Oct. 25), and Assassin’s Creed Shadows (Nov. 15), just to name a few.

Interestingly, we still do not have a firm release date for the other highly anticipated first-person Xbox title, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which is still due out this year.

Xbox has a beefy slate for next year lined up, including South of Midnight, Doom: The Dark Ages, and the new Fable.

Xbox will attend Gamescom in Germany later this month, showcasing Avowed and other upcoming games.
