The Sony PlayStation studio behind Marvel’s Spider-Man has suffered a ransomware attack from hacking group Rhysida. As reported by CyberDaily, Rhysida wanted a payment of $2 million to prevent leaking 1.67 terabytes of data.
Rhysida would end up posting about 98 percent of the data online, doxxing employees, including records, forms, and internal Slack screenshots, as well as revealing official contracts, forms, and information regarding Insomniac’s upcoming projects.
The leak confirms the fruitful partnership between Insomniac Games and Marvel. The Sony studio has already produced two highly successful Spider-Man games, and previously announced a Wolverine game, which has a tentative release of 2026, according to the leaked roadmap.
What we didn’t know is that Insomniac is working on an entire Venom game, and is actually the next game slated for release, in 2025. Spider-Man 3 is then due in 2028 (with apparently a shift to Miles Morales as the main spidey), with Marvel’s X-Men in 2030.
At least some of those games will probably launch on the yet-unconfirmed PlayStation 6.
Obviously a lot can change in that amount of time, but interesting that Insomniac is sticking with the Marvel IP for the foreseeable future.
Insomniac’s leaked roadmap also includes a new Ratchet & Clank sequel, and at last one completely new, unannounced IP.
“While the nature of the incident is deeply concerning, we want to assure our fans and partners that we are taking immediate action to investigate the situation and implement additional security measures,” stated Bryan Intihar, Chief Creative Officer, Insomniac Games. “Our top priority is protecting the privacy of our employees and the integrity of our projects.”
