The original (and objectively best) Sonic games are getting remastered for modern consoles. Sonic Origins will launch on June 23, on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, for $39.99.

Apparently June 23 is also Sonic’s birthday.

Sonic Origins includes Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles, and Sonic CD. Sonic 3 also includes Knuckles, which could then be used as a playable character in the first two games. That really blew my 10-year old kid mind at the time.

The remastered versions are developed directly by Sega. Players can switch between Classic or the updated Anniversary modes. Anniversary mode adds full screen display and offers infinite lives to avoid those pesky game over screens. It also adds fun animated cutscenes, as show in the above trailer.

Players can earn medallions by completing extra missions and tasks in each zone. Medallions can be spent to unlock extra content in the new vault.

There’s no doubt these are platforming classics, and some of the best games of the 90s. But $40 still feels a bit steep for 30-year old games, classics or no.

To make matters worse, some of the new content is locked behind DLC. The Start Dash Pack is included with pre-orders, and features Mirror Mode and Letterbox Background, has well as 100 bonus coins. The Premium Fun Pack includes Hard Missions and “character animations,” and is included in the Digital Deluxe version, which will set you back another $5. Not cool, Sega!

Sega Origins will release on June 23 in Standard and Digital Deluxe editions. It’s rated E for Everyone.
