In what will undoubtedly go down as one of the cooler trailers of Summer Game Fest, Dotemu and developer Leikir Studio announced Metal Slug Tactics, a grid-based tactical strategy game based on the 90s arcade shoot-’em-up series, coming to Steam PC. That trailer features some seriously awesome Saturday Morning Cartoon vibes.

Metal Slug Tactics gets the Peregrine Falcon Squad back together, with Marco Eri, Fio, and Tarma wielding over-the-top military weapons and vehicle against waves of enemy forces. Instead of arcade shoot ’em up, however, the squad will deploy their tactics via turn-based strategy in an isometric, grid-based map, as in Into the Breach.

The gameplay borrows from the roguelike genre with procedurally generated levels built from different combinations of hand-crafted terrain tiles.

The world of Metal Slug Tactics features colorful pixel art and gorgeous animation that Dotemu is becoming known for — see Streets of Rage 4, Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, and the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge.

Metal Slug originally began as a side-scrolling shoot ’em up in 1996. The simple but fun co-op gameplay inspired several sequels over the years, but has remained relatively dormant over the last decade.

No release date was given, but the Steam page for Metal Slug Tactics is up now.
