Indie developer Conifer Games has released a trailer, and a release date, for upcoming Civ-like grand strategy title Jon Shafer’s At the Gates. It’s coming to Steam and the At the Gates website on January 23, 2019.

At the Gates combines roguelike gameplay into an epic 4x grand strategy through the Dark Ages of a post-Roman Empire era. “Grand Strategy” typically refers to a big strategy game that plays out in real time, in which you control an entire faction, race, or culture. The game features a watercolor art style and a map that changes and evolves with the seasons and weather.

Confier Games was founded by Jon Shafer, best known as the lead designer from Sid Meier’s Civilization 5. At the Gates will be their debut title. It’s been in active development for nearly seven years. It was originally crowdfunded via Kickstarter back in 2013.

“I’ve always been driven to innovate with my games and At the Gates is no exception,” Shafer said. “The genre has gotten a bit stale but it still has enormous potential, and that’s what I’m aiming to tap into by mixing roguelike elements into the classic 4X grand strategy formula.”

Shafer will be in attendance at PAX South in San Anthonio, Texas (Jan 18-20), showing off the game. Jon Shafer’s At the Gates is due out on January 23, 2019.
