Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, the multiplayer online card-battling game by Blizzard Entertainment, is going to get some new content soon. Packages containing scrolls have been sent to a number of gaming enthusiast outlets including Polygon and PC Gamer. The scrolls announce the date for the new Hearthstone expansion, but don’t go into great detail about what the expansion actually contains.

The scroll text reads:

new hearthstone expansionWell met, hero!

Champions are gathering from around the world to witness the next exciting thing Hearthstone has in store. News travels far and wide in search of brave new faces ready to answer the call to arms — are you one of them?

Muster for battle and mark July 22 on your calendar. The next bit of news won’t come by carrier pigeon — thankfully, we have much better ways of communication now.

Victory awaits!

Many in the Hearthstone community think this new expansion will add a tournament mode to the game. Fans have been clamoring for a tournament mode since the launch of the game. But without any solid data from Blizzard, we don’t know for sure what the expansion will entail.

Other expansions for Hearthstone have included two single-player adventures and a new mode called Tavern Brawl. The single-player adventures, The Curse of Naxxramas and Blackrock Mountain, saw players battling computer-controlled enemies in order to earn special new cards. Each of these expansions also included hero-specific challenges with new cards specific to each class.

The Tavern Brawl game mode is an ever-changing mode that’s held Wednesdays through Sundays every week. Each week has a new set of rules. Once you win one game in Tavern Brawl, you’re rewarded with a free card pack. After that Tavern Brawl becomes merely for fun as no other rewards are given. This game mode is more accessible for casual players of the game as the battles put both combatants on pretty level ground and a reward can be obtained fairly quickly.

A fourth expansion came in the form in a large set of new cards. Goblins vs. Gnomes introduced the Mech class of cards in addition to other general and class-specific cards.

As a big Hearthstone player and fan, I’m super excited to see what this new expansion will entail.
