1. What’s your favorite kind of video game to play with your family?
Accessible cooperative or semi-cooperative games where you can progress together, or else simple competitive games. Lately, sharing deeper single-player game experiences has been a lot of fun as well, taking turns together over the course of weeks or months.
2. What kinds of game do you avoid?
I typically try to avoid games where your character can only progress through a narrative by committing acts of extreme and/or realistic violence without proper context to make the act believably unavoidable. There are some exceptions, though; they tend to be games with narratives that do not take themselves too seriously.
3. What’s your favorite quality in your gaming buddies (kids or not)?
Their eagerness to try new things and give their honest opinions . I have more experience with games than most of my circle, but I learn so much when sharing games amongst my closest friends who never spent more than a few hours playing in their lives.
4. What’s your idea of a miserable gaming experience?
Playing with someone who is a bit too serious a competitor and getting the freedom to explore a world I am not interested in exploring or as a character I cannot relate with.
5. In which virtual world would you choose to vacation?
I could do without the ominous presence, but a holiday in the forbidden land of Shadow of the Colossus would be splendid. I loved exploring its desolate landscapes and ancient ruins, and would gladly have done so even without massive living statues to slay. Just myself or with a companion, all alone in an ancient world…pure bliss.
6. Which game did you find most visually appealing?
Staring at the vibrant blue of The Legend of Zelda : The Wind Waker’s great sea never grew tiring. Few games offer such a seamless beauty, and its gorgeous cel-shading could not even be bettered in its high-definition rerelease. I suppose Fez would be a close second.
7. Which game soundtrack would you listen to on repeat?
Journey
8. Which game has your favorite story?
Echo Bazaar/Fallen London, for its brilliant and progressive concepts and its perfect execution. You are given the tools to create your own story in its world, but Failbetter’s excellent writing stands strong on its own.
For a more guided narrative, Portal 2 or Chrono Trigger are wonderfully written and thought out, with amazing characters.
9. Which video game character would you choose to be a hero for your kids?
Super Claire! She found her confidence and a purpose in her love of helping others. *Thomas Was Alone*
10. Who’s your favorite video game villain?
Portal’s GladOS
11. Which video game ability/item/superpower would you most like to be gifted with?
Phoenix Downs
12. What video game character would you pick to cosplay if you had unlimited time and resources?
I would definitely need the unlimited time and resources to grow my hair and weave it into the perfect Bayonetta attire.
