Story & Themes
For those familiar with Super Mario Galaxy, the sequel's story is more or less the same. Princess Peach is kidnapped yet again by Bowser during the Star Festival, though this time Bowser has grown in size after ingesting Grand Stars. Mario pursues Bowser and Peach in Starship Mario with the help of a Luma mechanic named Lubba, his brother Luigi, and the faithful Toad Brigade. In order to propel the Starship to Bowser's base, Mario must collect Power Stars from an assortment of different planets.
The game will offer you the chance to save after completing every level. Players can also choose the option "save and quit" in the pause menu.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is noted for being more difficult than its predecessor, but the game makes up for this by offering a Cosmic Guide (in the form of Rosalina) who can complete the level for the player if they die a certain number of times. The co-op multiplayer is also back and offers an easy second player experience for the young or inexperienced. However, this time the second player controls a Luma instead of merely the Star Pointers and has a few extra abilities because of this, such as being able to collect items.
Violence Super Mario Galaxy 2 features typical Mario-level violence. Mario attacks enemies by jumping on their heads, throwing green Koopa shells, or using his spin attack.
Consumerism Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a part of the massive Mario Bros. franchise, so some consumerism is implicit. However, there are not any microtransactions or the like in the game.
Discrimination Princess Peach in Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a prime example of the damsel in distress trope. She exists solely to be saved, and plays no larger part in the story.
