Sunderfolk is set in an anthropomorphic fantasy world called the Sunderlands. As defenders of the town of Arden, players choose from six different classes, such as Ranger, Pyromancer, and Berserker. The story follows an RPG campaign, with several main story missions interspersed with side quests. Both kinds of missions heavily feature the personable townsfolk of Arden. Between missions, players can speak to their favorite townsfolk, increase their affinity, gain rewards, upgrade buildings, and shop for supplies.
Missions play out as tactical, turn-based combat on hexagonal battlefields. Each round players choose one of their class cards to play, allowing them to move, attack, push, deploy buffs, modify the terrain, and other abilities. Goals in each missions vary from defeating enemies to rescuing allies, recovering supplies, or searching through locked rooms.
Sunderfolk is heavily inspired by tactical RPGs such as Dungeons & Dragons, including a single Game Master who voices all the non-player characters. There's not a lot of opportunity for role-playing outside of chatting with NPCs and mostly pre-scripted dialogue. Combat is engaging and easy to learn. The biggest hurdle is utilizing the unique companion app, which every player uses to control and access their character.
Sunderfolk autosaves between missions, and when exiting the game.
Sunderfolk features four different difficulty settings, which can be changed any time between missions. Turn turn-based gameplay is easy for veterans of tactical wargames, miniatures, and tabletop RPGs. Newcomers need to learn the importance of positioning, range, and their own ability cards. Sunderfolk is much more forgiving than many games of the genre, with shared lives, and no discarding cards or die rolls.
Violence Tactical combat is a core gameplay feature, pitting player characters against enemy monsters in hex-grid maps. Players and enemies use weapons and magic to defeat each other, but there no's blood or gore. Defeated enemies disappear, leaving behind a pile of gold.
Sunderfolk is designed for local couch co-op and does not officially support online play. However, since players connect to the game via a free app, anyone with the QR code can join. Players could share their screen across other platforms (such as Steam or Discord), allowing non-local players to play together.
