Sid Meier’s Pirates!

In Sid Meier's Pirates! players step into the shoes of a pirate to experience the usual brand of swashbuckling adventures as they traverse the Caribbean. As a child, the protagonist's family was captured by a nefarious Spanish marquis and sold into slavery when they couldn't pay off their debts. The protagonist escapes this same fate, growing up to become a sailor and, eventually, the captain of his own ship. Still, the protagonist has not forgotten the grave injustice committed against his family members, and over the course of his travels is eventually able to rescue them and enact revenge against the marquis.

Depending on the version of the game, progress can be saved either when players are at or out of port. Either way, the game is saved manually from the menu.

Players are able to select a difficulty level at the start of the game.
