Story & Themes
In Mexico, Marston comes into conflict with the leader of the Mexican Army and, after some fighting and betrayal, is able to apprehend both Escuella and Williamson. However, the Bureau of Investigation tells Marston that he will be unable to reunite with his family until Dutch van der Linde, the former leader of their bandit gang, is neutralized. After tracking Dutch down, Marston corners him on a clifftop, but Dutch ultimately chooses to commit suicide rather than face capture or execution. However, the Bureau still considers this outcome a victory, and Marston is able to return to his ranch with his wife and son. At this point, the story takes one final twist, and the player is able to control a character other than Marston for the final mission of the game.
Players can stick to the main story missions, or immerse themselves in the world via a variety of side missions and activities such as gambling, hunting, or herb collecting. Beyond the breathtaking, well-developed environment, Red Dead Redemption has also been noted for its superb music and voice acting.
The game offers players the ability to make several moral choices. Parents can talk to their kids about the types of choices they make, why they make these choices, and if they make decisions according to their own morals. For instance:
- What fate did you choose for Escuella? Why?
- Did you focus on gaining a positive or negative honor (or some of both)? Why did you make these choices?
