Story & Themes
Oxenfree stars a teenage girl named Alex who goes into the woods for a camping trip with her friends. The simple night of fun and hijinks quickly turns spooky when the kids come across a mysterious and otherwordly presence. Players expecting Oxenfree to be your typical teenagers-in-the-woods horror story will be disappointed, however, because the game consistently skirts the line of being considered full-blown horror and upends several cliches in the process. Ultimately, Oxenfree is about the lives and relationships of the characters more so than the strange occurrences they have stumbled into.
The game features a few puzzles of moderate challenge, but otherwise poses little else in terms of gameplay difficulty.
Violence References to violence can be heard in dialogue, but nothing is depicted.
Scary Imagery The game's spookiness is that of the atmospheric variety as opposed to abundant gore and jump scares. Still, it might be too scary for younger players.
Sex & Nudity Characters reference sex or sex-related activities several times throughout the game, but it's only talked about and never shown.
Strong Language Swearing in dialogue runs from mild to moderately strong and includes words like "hell" and "b*tch."
Substance Use Drug use is talked about and depicted.
