Story & Themes
New Super Mario Bros. 2 features a typical Mario storyline. Princess Peach is kidnapped by Bowser and the Koopalings, so Mario must travel through different areas in order to save her. Much of the gameplay is similar to that of other recent Mario platformers, including the use of power-ups to defeat enemies and progress through the levels. However, New Super Mario Bros. 2 relies more heavily on the mechanic of collecting coins. Coins collected from all levels are pooled together, and the player's grand total can be displayed on the Nintendo Network.
