As with most colony sims, the story is mostly what you make of it — though there is a clear endgame. Players manage their school from the ground up (and below ground!), constructing rooms, researching furniture, training new mages, and exploring the surrounding areas to gather precious resources.
This isn't a bright and cheery magic school. An evil fog is constantly threatening to consume the school, and the staff must constantly repel the fog while training to eventually disperse it altogether. Along the way, you'll need to invite students, train them, and move them into graduation, apprenticeship, or fall-time staff to help further the school's needs.
Mages can be directed to complete specific tasks, but are otherwise automated according to their schedules, their needs, and their priorities. Players must set out the most efficient school plans and schedules, as well as engage in turn-based tactical battles while exploring the dungeons beneath the school.
The game autosaves at the start of each new day, and can be manually saved at any time.
Mind Over Magic includes three difficulty levels, with the easiest setting keeping your staff happy and the bad events minimal. However, colony sims are notoriously obtuse and challenging to learn - and Mind Over Magic is no exception. The game does a poor job teaching the flow and gameplay, relying on players to read through little pop-up tutorials as they stumble along.
Violence Turn-based battles feature mages attacking monstrous enemies with spells. There is no blood or gore, however.
Scary Imagery Some of the monsters can be a bit creepy, leaning towards eldritch horror rather than traditional fantasy monsters. Though the animated art style mutes much of the scary factor.
