Story & Themes
As a competitive online hero shooter, Marvel Rivals is about 99% gameplay, 1% story. The story is told over seasonal events, beginning with two Doctor Dooms in different timelines shattering the Multiverse, creating a Secret Wars-like setting of heroes, villains, and What-If world settings.
The stylized art and vivid colors depict Marvel heroes and anti-heroes inspired by their comic counterparts. Players choose from a roster of over 30 in 6v6, objective-based matches, such as escorting (or denying) a convoy, or battling over key areas.
Every hero has unique abilities and gameplay styles, from bulky tanks to nimble assassins, and supportive healers. Though it's a "hero shooter," some heroes don't have any ranged attacks at all, preferring to get up close and swipe with claws or melee weapons.
Teamwork is critical, as is knowledge of the maps, and every heroes' strengths and weaknesses.
Unique to Rivals are Team-Ups, special bonuses that unlock when certain hero combinations are present on a team. For example, Rocket Racoon and Jeff the Land Shark can ride on Groot's shoulders.
Save Points
As a competitive online game, Marvel Rivals cannot be paused or saved during matches.
Difficulty
In addition to quick match and competitive ranked modes, Marvel Rivals also features a robust practice range, and team matches against AI opponents. Players can choose between three difficulty levels for AI bots, and continue to complete daily missions and earn battle pass rewards.
Heroes are rated from one to five stars in difficulty and complexity, allowing newer players to jump in and contribute with more straightforward heroes, such as Mantis and Squirrel Girl. Not every hero requires careful aiming or lightning reflexes.
Heads Up!
Violence Superheroes battle each other with a variety of weapons and abilities, including missiles and guns, swords, claws, and arcane blasts. There is no blood or gore, however, and characters barely react to being hit. The action and art style are very colorful and inspired by comic books.
Sex & Nudity Superheroes in Rivals feature an exaggerated art style (which many comic artists utilize), such as hugely proportion muscles or shapely legs and glutes, with skin-tight costumes.
Consumerism As an online, free-to-play game, Marvel Rivals is monetized through seasonal battle passes and a store of purchasable skins. Players can slowly earn battle pass tokens and in-game currency to unlock goodies, or purchase currency using real-money. The primary method of support is through purchasing the Luxury version of the Battle Pass, which unlocks additional skins, sprays, and other cosmetics.
However, players cannot purchase any gameplay-enhancing features, only cosmetics.
