Story & Themes
Mario Kart Wii is a racing game without any sort of story. Players choose a character from the Mario franchise (or one of their own Miis) with which to speed through the various courses on karts of motorcycles. Picking up and using special items such as Mushrooms grants players a brief advantage and can improve their chances of winning. By reaching certain milestones like earning a gold trophy on one of the eight cups, more characters and vehicles can be unlocked.

The game no longer supports online multiplayer, but up to four players can join a match locally. Players can race against each other, work together by racing on the same team, or compete in one of the Battle modes to rack up the most points or collect the greatest amount of coins before the time runs out.
Save Points
The game automatically saves the progress of all races.
Difficulty
The game's controls are very simple, the easiest choice being to use the intuitive Wii Wheel.
Heads Up!
Violence Players can sabotage their competitors by throwing bombs or Koopa shells in their direction, but this is the extent of the game's violence.
Consumerism By virtue of belonging to the extensive Mario franchise, the game encourages the consumption of various types of media and action figures.
Online Community
Mario Kart Wii used to support online multiplayer matches of up to twelve players, but this is no longer the case as of May 2014.
