Story & Themes
Machine Cares takes place in a dystopian future, and the outside world seems to have been devastated by an extreme snow storm. However, this environment is secondary to that of Tower 4, the player's new home. It's a residence building filled with other teenagers and overseen by the Machine, a slightly unhinged robot that serves to undercut the game's heaviness with occasional humor. As the newest resident, players find themselves in the room of a former resident called Jay. Sometime in the recent past, Jay committed suicide, and the play character begins investigating the circumstances around his death. The bulk of this investigation is centered upon building trust and relationships with Tower 4's other inhabitants, and as players come to know these characters, they will be able to recognize them as dynamic individuals with their own insecurities and secrets.
Difficulty
Machine Cares uses mouse controls and has a straightforward interface. The most difficult aspect of the game is making decisions, and that boils down to player opinion.
Heads Up!
Violence The game references both suicide and cutting, though nothing is shown on screen. However, players sensitive to either of those things should be forewarned before they play.
Sex & Nudity Several of the characters are or have been involved in sexual relationships with each other, as evidenced in dialogue. One of the characters has a pregnancy scare.
Strong Language Words like "sh*t" and "f*ck" appear in the text several times.
Substance Use One of the characters smokes weed and another consumes alcohol fairly frequently. At one point, the player speaks to the second character while he is obviously in a state of inebriation.
