Story & Themes
The Lunar games are classic RPGs from the early 90s, and among the first to incorporate FMV anime cutscenes throughout the narrative. Both games offer classic hero's journeys of saving a fantasy world from a dire threat by exploring towns and dungeons, and defeating monsters. The RPGs are shorter and more straightforward than more modern console RPGs, and helped pave the way for familiar (and somewhat beloved) JRPG tropes, story structure, and gameplay.
The Lunar games make great entries for newer players to the genre. As with most successful RPGs, the characters and party members are the highlight, with fun story moments that flesh out their personalities and relationships. The colorful, pixelated art style holds up well with the remastered versions, though parents should note the T rating, mostly from some suggestive dialogue.
Save Points
The Lunar Remastered Collection can be manually saved at any time outside combat.
Difficulty
The Lunar games are straightforward RPGs, but some battles can be challenging. Players may have to grind to reach higher levels, and come stocked with restorative items.
Heads Up!
Violence During frequent turn-based battles, human adventurers attack fantastical monsters with weapons and spells. The early graphics leave little room for violence and gore, with enemies simply disappearing, and party members dropping down. There is some blood spatter in animated cutscenes.
Sex & Nudity Suggestive dialogue and partial nudity (during cutscenes, specifically the opening cutscenes) are what primarily give the Lunar games a T rating. Not exactly an R-rated sex comedy, but a bit more that what the colorful, kid-friendly art style would suggest.
Strong Language No direct swearing, but use of words like "bastard" and "arse"
Substance Use Players can interact with drunk NPCs at various times, with slurred speech.
