Story & Themes
The 2016 Hitman is a prequel to the previous games and details the earlier days of genetically enhanced Agent 47's career as a killer-for-hire. The story begins as our protagonist arrives at an ICA (International Contract Agency) facility in central Europe and completes a series of training exercises before being sent off on his first mission. The game is split into five different episodes, each one focusing on a separate mission in a new location. Agent 47 begins with a contract to assassinate two fashion industry veterans in Paris and is thereafter called on to carry out various other hits in Sapienza, Marrakesh, Bangkok, and Colorado. Throughout the missions, Agent 47 starts to realize that all of the contracts have been indirectly issued by a mysterious shadow client who he ultimately attempts to confront in the final chapter.
Difficulty
Hitman has a rather steep learning curve and complicated controls. It may not be the best choice for players who are new to the action/stealth genre.
Heads Up!
Violence Players can incapacitate both targets and random characters, but only the assigned targets can be killed. Agent 47 can use guns or knives to carry out his hits, and the targets will bleed fairly realistically when injured.
Sex & Nudity Players can occasionally hear suggestive comments from NPCs and, if they so choose, can sometimes remove the clothing from other characters such that they are left in their underwear.
Strong Language Strong and gendered language like "f*ck" and "b*tch" appear frequently.
Substance Use Some characters converse about drugs and are depicted in the same vicinity as alcohol, but no one is ever shown actually drinking or using illicit substances.
Conversation Starters
- Do you think it makes a difference whether or not a game asks you to kill people as part of a larger goal or simply for the sake of killing them? Do you ever feel uncomfortable in the role of a hired assassin?
- What do you think about Agent 47's backstory? Is he a sympathetic character?
