Story & Themes
As the first entry in the Heroes of Might and Magic series in over a decade, Olden Era is set centuries before the original series, on a different continent. The campaign story revolves around the sudden invasion of parasitic insectoid monsters known as the Hive, one of the new playable factions, leaving the others to scramble for answers and alliances.
The world of HoMM is one of constant warfare between armies of fantasy creatures, from minotaurs and dragons to skeletal hounds and tentacled horrors. After selecting a map and a faction, players must use their heroes to collect resources and treasures while managing their castle's buildings and their heroes' skills, spells, and armies.
When heroes come across enemy units, the game shifts to a tactical hex-grid battlefield, with armies taking turns moving their units and deploying abilities and spells.
Maps could feature different win objectives, such as capturing a certain city, or defeating an enemy hero in single combat.
Gameplay is deeply layered and complex, but with an intuitive interface and helpful tutorial and advanced Challenges.
Aside from Classic mode, players can enjoy a full single-player campaign (limited to Act 1 in early access), smaller Scenarios and Challenges, or experiment with pure combat in Arena mode.
The HoMM series was once known for exceptional art design and music, and Olden Era continues this trend.
Heads Up!
Violence Combat takes place on a more intimate battlefield, as units clash using a variety of melee and ranged attacks. There is some blood when unit stacks are killed, and a corpse is left behind.
Sex & Nudity A few of the female units wear revealing or little clothing, such as the Lightweaver and Concubus.
Substance Use Players hire additional heroes at a Tavern, which is depicted as a mug of beer on the menu. However, there is no other reference to alcohol or other substances.
