Story & Themes
The Gears of War series takes place on a planet known as Sera. 15 years before the beginning of Gears of War 3, an alien race known as the Locust emerged from vast networks of tunnels beneath the surface of Sera. Since the day that they emerged the Coalition of Ordered governments, or COG, have been fighting the Locust and losing badly. Worse, it is revealed during Gears of War 2 that the Locust were forced to emerge by yet another malicious alien race known as the Lambent. The protagonist is Marcus Fenix, a COG soldier. COG forces have been pushed back to a single outpost on a remote volcanic island. But one day, they discover that Marcus' father, a prominent scientist in the days before the emergence of the Locust, may still be alive. Marcus and his squad set off to rescue him and to see if he might hold some key to defeating the Locust and Lambent once and for all.

Heads Up!
Violence The entire Gears of War series is well known for being very violent, and the third entry in the series is no exception. In addition to the bullets, bombs, and blood spatter of a typical shooter, it is also possible to chainsaw enemies to death and use corpses as "meat shields". Most enemies are humanoid aliens, but the player will sometimes fight human soldiers as well.
Scary Imagery The aliens which serve as the primary enemies in Gears of War 3 can be somewhat scary, often appearing insect-like to varying degrees.
Strong Language Gears of War 3 does not shy away from swearing of any kind. From the ESRB: "Language such as 'f**k,' 'sh*t,' and 'a*shole' can be heard in the dialogue."
Discrimination Gears of War 3 is the first game in the series which features a female main character. That said, in the plot she mostly exists to be the main character's love interest. Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski has said in an interview that there are few women in the COG army because they are all busy having babies on "breeding farms" to replenish the human population. Epic Games' art director Chris Pernas has said in an interview that, "If you look at what sells, it's tough to justify something like [a female main character]." Inclusive the Gears of War series is not.
Online Community
The online community of Gears of War 3 is basically the same as any other online shooter: almost completely toxic. Mute liberally.
