Story & Themes
In FTL: Faster Than Light, players take on the role of the captain of the Kestrel. Separated from the rest of their fleet and carrying information vital to their war effort, players must navigate a dangerous galaxy filled with enemy ships and asteroid fields to save the Federation from the Rebel Fleet.

Along the way, players will encounter procedurally-driven content that changes with each playthrough, including rebel ships seeking to destroy you, other ships that have run out of fuel, and several planets to explore. The player can chose to help or ignore those who need aid, and can often avoid combat rather than tackle enemies head on. The journey culminates in a final battle against the enemy fleet's flagship.

FTL: Faster Than Light, even with relatively simple graphics, creates the feeling of commanding your own starship. Fans of series such as Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and Firefly will find a lot to appreciate in this game.

Representation Players can customize the crew members they start the game with. In addition, players can unlock and add alien crew members to their ship over the course of the game.

One of the random events in the game is an encounter with a "slave ship." In some cases, the player has the option of giving up a crew member to be a slave to avoid combat, purchasing a slave, or accepting a slave in exchange for not destroying the slaver ship. Any slaves that arrive on player ships are immediately freed and given full status as crew members.
Save Points
Players can save at any time.
Difficulty
FTL: Faster Than Light is a difficult game, with punishing gameplay even on easier difficulty levels. Any failure—such as losing all your crew members or being destroyed in combat—results in a permanent death and deletes the save file. Most players will have to restart FTL many times before they beat the game, and younger players may become frustrated.
Heads Up!
Violence FTL: Faster Than Light contains mild violence, including gunfire between space ships and physical combat between enemy crew members.
