Story & Themes

In Fort Meow, the young, red-headed Nia travels to her grandparents' manor home for her summer visit. Since her grandparents aren't home when she arrives, Nia goes to explore the attic where she finds her grandfather's journal. Nia begins to peruse its contents, but is interrupted by numerous cats each intent on curling up in her lap and monopolizing her attention. Nia's goal, therefore, becomes to desperately fend off the needy cats by constructing forts out of the available furniture. Amid waves of cat attacks, Nia reads through the journal and gradually comes to understand the manor's mysteries, chief among them why there are so many cats around.
