Story & Themes
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn takes place in the continent of Eorzea, a land of diverse geographical regions. Players can choose to start in one of three cities: Gridania, which is largely forested; Ul'dah, a desert city; and Limsa Lominsa, which is located on an island. The player becomes an adventurer by joining the local guild of their city of choice, and eventually a variety of quests and undertakings lead him/her to the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. This mysterious organization tells the player that the visions he/she has been experiencing are a result of something called the Echo, and that they indicate the player has been chosen by the Hydaelyn (or Mothercrystal). At this point, the player is welcomed into the Scion order and discovers new foes who threaten the safety of the world through the use of crystals.
Difficulty
As with any MMO, A Realm Reborn has its own somewhat expansive set of rules and strategies to learn which may intimidate new players. However, the game does have a tutorial system that can be switched on or off.
Heads Up!
Violence Combat in A Realm Reborn is centered around melee weapons and magic and is typical of the fantasy genre. Blood appears sparingly in cutscenes but is not a feature of combat.
Sex & Nudity Typical of Final Fantasy games, scantily-clad women are a regular feature. Some characters will also make vaguely suggestive remarks.
Strong Language Swearing is moderate in strength and infrequent in use. Words like "sh*t" will occasionally appear in dialogue.
Substance Use Players can encounter characters who drink or are drunk, but cannot engage in drinking themselves.
Consumerism All Final Fantasy games are a part of an enormous franchise similar to Mario or Zelda. The franchise includes numerous games, companion novels and manga, and other collectibles or pieces of merchandise.
Discrimination Female characters in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn are often portrayed in revealing, sexualized clothing, though many of these characters are also strong or capable fighters. This raises questions as to the representation of women as sexual objects and whether an overt sexualization can be considered empowering.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is played entirely online. Players can talk to each other through the open chat, though some words are not allowed.
