Donkey Kong Country Returns is a classic side-scrolling platfomer starring the tie-wearing Donkey Kong and his little sidekick Diddy Kong. A new villain group called the Tiki Tak Tribe are controlling amimals and stealing the Kongs' bananas, prompting the duo to set off on an adventure to reclaim them (and rescue the animals).
Returns is inspired by the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy from the mid-90s, with challenging platforming sequences, lots of extra movement via barrels, minecarts, and animal mounts, and boppin' music.
Up to two players can join together in local co-op, with each controlling a different ape. In single-player, Diddy rides on Kong's back, where Kong can use his jetpack (and counts as an extra life).
The action, world, and enemies are vibrant and cartoonish, though the platforming can be quite challenging and even frustrating in some areas.
Aside from updated graphics, the HD version includes the extra levels from the 3DS version, which originally released in 2013.
Despite both being kid-friendly Nintendo platformers, the Donkey Kong Country series is generally more challenging and less forgiving than Mario, especially during rapid racing sequences.
Violence Mild Fantasy Violence. Kong's can jump and ground pound to defeat enemies.
