Story & Themes

Device 6 stars Anna, a 20-something woman who wakes up in a strange castle on an island with no memory of how she got there. The player must observe Anna's surroundings in order to solve puzzles and help Anna escape. The island is an incredibly strange and desolate place, and it seems filled with strange riddles left just for her.

Most of the game is told through written word, though sound is required to solve some of the puzzles. Device 6 uses text in a unique way to guide the player through its story. If Anna needs to turn left, the text will veer off to the left, and the player must rotate the device in order to follow along. Participatory actions like this pair excellently with a story that is superbly self-aware.

Difficulty

Many of the puzzles in Device 6 are quite tricky. You will probably need a pen and paper in order to take notes as you go.

Heads Up!

Violence Violence is implied on multiple occasions. [Spoilers] The nefarious organization HAT uses technology to manipulate the thoughts and movements of Anna and other test subjects. One scene shows a man being forced to continue performing the same song on his guitar over and over and over again, without the ability to rest or drink water. This lack of control is spooky. At the end of the game, a gunshot can be heard, and a murder is implied.

Scary Imagery Device 6 gets pretty cerebral. [Spoilers] By the end of the game, the player has become incorporated into the story, and it's strongly implied that the player is going to be kidnapped and experimented upon in the near future. It's incredibly meta (self-referential) and incredibly cool, but also a little frightening.

Substance Use Cigarettes and alcohol are mentioned more than once.
