Story & Themes
Deus Ex is all about transhumanism. The series takes place in a future where the technology exists to make prosthetics that are not only as good, but better than the original body part. Some people, even with normally functioning bodies, choose to be "augmented" with prosthetics so that they can do things that a normal person without augmentations could not. However, not everyone thinks this is a good thing. The protagonist must often struggle against anti-transhumanism religious groups, criminal gangs of augmented thugs, and even shadowy groups of the rich and influential who attempt to control the world from behind the scenes.
Save Points
Deus Ex: Human Revolution and its downloadable content (DLC) all autosave whenever anything important happens. It is also possible to save manually at any time.
Heads Up!
Violence These games are basically third-person shooters, and most of the enemies you encounter are human beings. The player does have the choice to avoid conflict or to use non-lethal weapons, but if the player so desires there will be blood.
Sex & Nudity In Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the main character does some missions involving a brothel. There is no nudity and no explicit dialogue.
Strong Language Some heavy swearing will be encountered.
Substance Use It is possible to find and consume alcohol in all Deus Ex games. In Deus Ex: Human Revolution, everyone who has cybernetic augmentations must take anti-rejection drugs known as Neuropozyne, known as Nu-Poz on the street. Nu-Poz does not have any psychoactive effects, but it is often compared to addictive drugs by those who are opposed to the use of augmentations in the game.
Conversation Starters
- Deus Ex is all about exploring questions related to what it means to be human. Here are some ideas for conversation starters:
- Will augmentations bring more power to the individual? Or will they simply make it easier for those in power to control the population?
- Is it even possible to augment humans ethically, without losing our humanity?
- Some people in the deaf community criticize the practice of cochlear implants (a surgical procedure that helps some deaf people hear), because they may negatively affect deaf culture. Do you see parallels between these critics and the anti-augmentation people in Deus Ex?
- How would you decide which augmentations to get (cosmetic augmentations vs. augmentations to correct a disability)?
