Culdcept Begins' single-player campaign is centered around Kamru, a young Cepter at the Royal Cept Academy, where gifted Cepters learn to use stone tablets to wield a mystical power to summon creatures. In other words, a professional traveling board game player!
The story takes Kamru and his allies to all the corners of their world as an ancient god reawakens. But mostly it's an excuse to play a series of board game matches with a variety of boards and opponents.
In each game, players take turns rolling a d8 to move around the board. Like Monopoly, players can own/claim spaces they land on, and other players have to then pay a fee if they land on it. Unlike Monopoly, Culdcept uses Mana instead of Money. Players then use that mana with our customizable 40-card deck of monsters, items, and spells to claim tiles, defeat enemy monsters, and manipulate the board state.
Between missions, players unlock new cards and purchase in-game booster packs, forming their personal deck of cards. Monsters summon onto spaces to claim them, or battle enemy monsters. Items, including armor and weapons, can help boost monsters in battle. While spells can alter dice, change spaces, drain mana, draw cards, and other useful abilities.
The match ends when a player reaches a certain amount of mana, and crosses the starter castle space.
The game offers a large amount of replayability thanks to different board configurations, and a big roster of 400 cards with which to build a deck, not to mention the lengthy campaign.
In addition to the story, players can play solo Versus mode, as well as Online Versus. Local play is only available on Switch 2 via GameShare.
