Story & Themes
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is broken up into three main "episodes."

At the beginning of episode one, Captain Toad and Toadette are exploring the wilderness and collecting treasure when suddenly a giant bird called Wingo comes and kidnaps Toadette. Toad completes a series of puzzles, all the while chasing after Wingo.

In episode two, after Toad rescues his companion, the two are once again seeking treasure when Wingo returns. This time, Wingo kidnaps Toad. Now, Toadette must rescue Toad.

In episode three, Toadette is kidnapped yet again, but this time she escapes. Some levels are played as Toad, and others as Toadette. Toadette is then kidnapped a third time, and Toad must rescue her and defeat Wingo once and for all.

After the third episode, it's revealed that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a prequel to Super Mario 3D World.

Difficulty
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is an excellent game for players at varying skill levels. The main puzzle of each level is usually pretty simple, but there are lots of bonus goodies to collect, which will keep even the most advanced players engaged and satisfied. Plus, if you fail to complete a level several times in a row, the game will make things easier by giving you a special mushroom that makes you impervious to attack.
Heads Up!
Violence The ESRB gave Captain Toad an E for "Mild Cartoon Violence." Mild is right—the violence is incredibly family-friendly. Toad and Toadette can squish bad guys, which causes them to vanish in a puff of smoke. They can also fall into lava, whack bad guys with a pickax, throw turnips at enemies, and fall off of cliffs (without sustaining damage). There is no blood or gore.
Consumerism Captain Toad first appears in the game Super Mario 3D World, and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker encourages players to give that game a try. This game will also soon be compatible with Nintendo's collectable amiibo figurines.
