Story & Themes
Like any good mystery, Blue Prince opens with a death. The player's wealthy uncle has passed, and has left his substantial estate to his teenage nephew. However, Simon must find the 46th room of the 45-room mansion in order to gain the inheritance.
Simon only has so much energy to explore the house, and every new door offers a choice of several rooms, with each room featuring different puzzles, clues, items, or special features. Once exhausted (or running out of keys or gems), players must Call it a Day, and start the adventure over with a blank manor, but with knowledge gained from previous runs.
Not only must players keep track of cryptic puzzles and hidden information, but the very layout of the manor changes, offering depths of strategy to its layout. Exploring the empty house in first-person is an immersive affair, though the game never veers into horror, and choosing rooms and solving puzzles makes for a wonderfully collaborative exercise the whole family can enjoy.
Save Points
Players can only save the game at the end of each run. But players can always end a run early with no real penalty, except starting over again with a blank manor and no items.
Difficulty
Blue Prince is incredibly easy to play, needing only three buttons (confirm, cancel, and map), and moving around the manor is methodical and intuitive. The challenge comes from the puzzles, many of which are hidden, and most of which require multiple runs and playthroughs to begin figuring out. Vigilant exploration, note-taking, and critical thinking is required.
Heads Up!
Scary Imagery Although the first-person adventure is highly immersive, it's never scary. However, exploring a large, empty manor is intrinsically unsettling, and a few rooms (such as the Darkroom's flickering lights) can be a bit spooky.
Substance Use One of the rooms players can unlock is the Wine Cellar (though wine is not interactive), while another features a slot machine players can use to earn more money.
